Baicalin is a flavonoid extracted from the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, a dicotyledonous plant, which is a light yellow powder at room temperature with bitter taste. It is insoluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in chloroform and nitrobenzene, almost insoluble in water, and soluble in hot acetic acid. Green in contact with ferric chloride, orange precipitate in contact with lead acetate. Dissolved in alkali and ammonia, it appears yellow at first, but turns black-brown soon. It has significant biological activity, with antibacterial, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, cholesterol-lowering, anti-thrombosis, relief of asthma, diarrhea and detoxification, hemostasis, antifetus, anti-metamorphosis and antispasmodic effects, also as a specific inhibitor of mammalian liver salivary enzymes, with the role of regulating certain diseases, also has a strong anti-cancer response physiological effect.
