Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst.) is a genus of Bacopa in the genus Xanthaceae. It is a creeping herb with roots at the nodes, ± fleshy, glabrous, and extremely horsetail-like in habit. The leaves are sessile, rectangular-oblanceolate, 8-20 mm long, 3-6 mm wide, lly rounded and rarely toothed. Flowers solitary in leaf axils, pedicels 0.5-3.5 cm long, with a pair of striped bracteoles below the calyx. Capsule long ovate, lly acute, enclosed in a persistent calyx, 4-valved. Seeds ellipsoidal, truncate at one end, yellowish brown, with longitudinal ribs on the surface. May-October.
Widely distributed in the tropics worldwide; in China it occurs in Taiwan, Fujian, Guangdong, and Yunnan. Grows on waterfronts, wetlands, and beaches.
This species is mostly used for potted plants to beautify smaller spaces such as windows and balconies, and can also be temporarily planted in aquariums as a mesquite for viewing. The whole herb can be used as medicine to clear heat and cool the blood, detoxify and reduce swelling.
